Statement from NYSYR Chair Peter Giunta following Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2023 Executive Budget Proposal

By February 1, 2023February 3rd, 2023Statements

“Today’s Executive Budget Proposal confirms just how woefully unaware Governor Kathy Hochul is of the issues affecting everyday New Yorkers. At a time when most working families are tightening their belts to make ends meet, Hochul presented a massive spending package that includes giving more than $1 billion of taxpayer money to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), arguably the most bloated and egregiously mismanaged government agency in the nation. In fact, she’s hoping to shoulder most of this burden on the backs of downstate small businesses who’ve already been battered by more than a decade of New York Democrats’ anti-business agenda. Andrew Cuomo gutted Upstate New York, so it comes as no surprise that his successor, Kathy Hochul, would attempt to gut downstate too.

Hochul’s Executive Budget Proposal was filled with half-baked proposals that fell short of any real solutions — and, let’s be honest, we all know who really controls the state budget process. It’s not Hochul, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, or Senate Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Like always, it’ll be the smallest group in the room with the loudest voice, and, ultimately, it’ll be everyday New Yorkers who are forced to deal with the consequences in the end.”
