Statement from NYSYR Chairman Peter Giunta on the death of 22 y/o NYPD Officer in deadly Harlem shooting

By January 23, 2022Statements

“During this difficult time, our hearts go out to the men and women of the New York City Police Department, as well as to the family of wounded Officer Wilbert Mora and especially that of fallen Officer Jason Rivera. These young men already accomplished more than most their age when they joined the NYPD. They had hoped to make a difference in the city they called home.

But let’s talk about what really happened, because what we are witnessing is a failure at every level. Action must be taken by those in Washington to stop the flow of illegal firearms into our state. Action must be taken by those in Albany to stop the revolving door that has become our broken criminal justice system. And action must be taken by those at City Hall to support our law enforcement officers as they put their lives on the line to protect the people of this city.

No more excuses. No more politics. The time for those in power to do something is now. President Biden, New York Governor Hochul, Assembly Speaker Heastie, Senate Leader Stewart-Cousins, and New York City Mayor Adams must act to prevent another tragedy.”
